 Santa Maria de los Cocos
is located in the State of Queretaro,
Mexico.
One of the most interesting but unnoticed
geological sites in our country is in the core of the Sierra Gorda
in Queretaro called the
"Sotano de Barro" (Mud Basement). It is a cave
of approximately
600 meter diameter and 400 meters
deep (1,312 feet) located in the limits of the State
of Guanajuato and
with the State of San Luis Potosi.
The mystery of
this cave has been
challenged very few times by speleologists and amateur athletes in its high
slopes. That is why the challenge stands for men and women who are ready to
escape a world of routine and start into the adventure.
 The mountain and the
entrance to the cave are surrounded by an incredible amount of wildlife where the cries of
the macaws cheer
up the tourist's trail.
Many of the nearby places are, in fact,
ecological niches meant to preserve an interesting part of the Mexican botanical wealth.

Only seven kilometers from
the base of the mountains, the simple but
cheerful town of Santa Maria de los Cocos is
located.

This
strangely named town has a small lodging which can accommodate up to eight people in two
bedrooms.
The lodge is an authentic example of a rustic construction built
with wood,
mud and palm leaves. This is something which gives the traveler a
taste of simplicity. |
How
to get to Santa Maria de los Cocos:
-
By car: From Mexico City take the highway towards Rio Verde, State of
San Luis Potosi. On this
highway you will pass Jalpan and get to Ayutla. At Ayutla take the dirt road towards Santa
Maria de los Cocos (approximately 30 kilometers -19 miles-). The lodging is
located 30 meters (312 yards)
before reaching the town.

For those people who do
not have a car, they may take a bus from Mexico City to Jalpan at the North Bus Terminal. From Jalpan you can take
local transportation service to Santa Maria de los Cocos which will take approximately two
hours.
